Laboratory upgrade at the fieldstation 2009

For the first time since it's construction in the late 1970's, the Laboratory building at the field station is undergoing extensive re-development. Stage 1, almost completed, includes:-

  • a separate work area for students/visitors with internet access
  • new wet laboratory areas
  • new laboratory benches and research facilities
  • improved lecture facilities, including IT facilities
  • new archival storage areas

Long term plans for the laboratory's upgrade are dependent on potential sponsorship and financial backing. With sufficient funds and interest, Stage 2, the installation of state-of-the-art research facilities for the marine sciences with a new hydraulics layout for a reticulated saltwater aquarium system (de-salination and UV sterilisation plant; algal scrubbing system) will be a possibility.
